Sugarloaf Heritage Council
The Sugarloaf Heritage Council, (SHC), was formed in the fall of 2007 to restore and enhance Sugarloaf Mountain in Heber Springs, Arkansas. Concerns have been voiced by those who use the mountain for recreation and relaxation regarding the graffiti and deteriorating trails on the mountain. Sugarloaf Mountain has a strong identity to Heber Springs and Cleburne County and the many tourists who visit the area. Therefore, it is felt that restoration and maintenance of the mountain be started as soon as feasible. The owner of the property is Arkansas State University which houses the beautiful new ASU-Heber Springs campus. While the foot of Sugarloaf Mountain is a wonderful setting for the ASU-Heber Springs campus, it is not within the mission of ASU to restore and maintain the local landmark and recreation area. However, ASU has agreed to allow SHC to affect the restoration and enhancements necessary. The SHC was formed by concerned local citizens to raise funds, coordinate restoration efforts and provide on-going maintenance for this spectacular resource.
