Work begins on Hidden Pond Trail

We’ve begun preliminary work to build a trail to a pond that is hidden from most of our visitors.  This will be a different kind of trail through the woods to a small pond on the property.  Think of it as our “Walden Pond” for quiet reflection.  Picnic facilities will be installed and ultimately the trail will be handicapped accessible.  More details will become available as we complete the work.

Grant Awarded for Trails Restoration

The grant we submitted to the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department for funding to repair and enhance the historic trail on the mountain HAS BEEN APPROVED!  At $29,000 that’s a HUGE start toward restoring the trail and improving the trailhead.  Through the generous donations from members and sponsors, we have raised the balance of the estimated $50,000 necessary for this phase of our rehabilitation, renovation and improvements.

Graffiti cleaning

A group of volunteers led by Board Members Jeff Baggett and Frank Barton worked throughout the past year removing virtually all of the graffiti from the mountain.  We feel very appreciative for all the volunteers who have help us in this effort.  Although a small amount of new graffiti has appeared (see below), we strive to keep the trail and mountain graffiti free. Click here for before and after photos.

Graffiti Sprayers Arrested - To Be Prosecuted!!!

Alerts citizens reported that someone was spraying graffiti on the mountain recently.  They called the Heber Springs Police Department and the perpetrators were arrested. Our local newspaper, The Sun-Times, did an excellent job of covering the crime and you can read their article here.

Sugarloaf Mountain Master Trails Plan Finalized

We have finalized the Master Trails Plan.  Thanks to the help of Eastin Outdoors, Inc., of Fayetteville, AR, we have a great plan for our future fund raising and trail blazing efforts.  A depiction of the contemplated enhancements can be viewed here.  We will be sharing the plan throughout the community in the coming weeks.  We’d very much like your comments and ideas on the plan, so send us an email or give us a call if you’d like to see a copy.  See our Join Us page for contact info.
